Biography
Mick Loates, born in 1947, studied at Sidcup & Ravensbourne Schools of Art.  On leaving, a frustrating spell in advertising was endured prior to finding work illustrating for the RSPB and publishers of Natural History books. The majority of his works are executed in transparent watercolour with drybrush overglazes. No white paint or body colour is used. Mick maintains that to paint fish well you must have a sound knowledge of your subject observing, noting behaviour, movement and light-play as well as water patterns and rhythms. Familiarity with anatomy and skeletal structure is essential to produce an accurate and life like picture. He has contributed to numerous wildlife and sporting volumes, solely illustrating 16 titles including Henry Williamson’s classic “Salar the Salmon”. Brian Clarke’s “Trout Etcetera”. Mick has exhibited in London and contributes regularly to The Society of Wildlife Artists. His superb compositions have graced front covers and featured in many prestigious publications. Mick has travelled extensively to remote areas of Europe, the Ukraine, North Africa, California, the mid-Pacific, Singapore, New Zealand and the Nepalese Himalayas.
